CEDA's Daily Food Prices data tool shows retail and wholesale prices of 22 essential commodities since 2009 to the present, updated daily.
From 2009 to 2023, the Price Monitoring Cell (PMC) under the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) was collating daily retail and wholesale prices of 22 essential commodities from over 500 centres across India. Beginning September 2023, there has been a change in the way prices are being reported — prices are now being reported at the state and national levels, and centre-level data is no longer being published.
Therefore, users will find two time series on CEDA’s data portal. We provide data and visualisations of daily retail and wholesale prices for each commodity at the state, zone and all-India level with daily updation of price data in the Time Series (National + State Level), 2014 onwards. Additionally, the archives of the data at the more granular centre level as was reported by PMC from 2009 till September 2023 are available in the Time Series (National + Centre Level), 2009-2023.
Our portal also permits users to access the raw data in an easily downloadable format.
The details on methodology used for collating and validating the price data is provided on the DoCA website, and the original price reports are available here. Details on the various indicators and the tool's features are provided in the README file.
CEDA also constructs two daily-level food price indices for the retail and wholesale markets of urban India, based on the DoCA data. Methodological details for constructing the indices are provided here. The portal allows users to visualize these indices in a daily or monthly mode for all 22 commodities or the various commodity sub-groups present.
